PRESENTATION OF THE TROPHY WILL TAKE PLACE WHEN ALL THE SCORES ARE IN AND FINALISED.

HISTORY

The Three Sisters Trophy – A Cherished Tradition

The Three Sisters Trophy was first presented in 1990 by three remarkable women:

• Kay Burden, Past Captain of Carlyon Bay
• Mary Coyte, Past Captain of St Austell
• Ros Evans, Past Captain of Carlyon Bay

The idea was born after the sisters played in the Freda Knight Cup at Carlyon Bay – a competition for past captains of both clubs. After the match, they gathered in the clubhouse over a cup of tea with other past captains from both Carlyon Bay and St Austell. During the conversation, they reflected on the fact that past captains were not invited to St Austell Golf Club for any competitions.

From this simple but meaningful discussion came a wonderful idea: a reciprocal trophy for all members of both clubs – not just past captains. Thus, the Three Sisters Trophy was created, to be played annually at St Austell Golf Club.

In 1990, the first competition was held, and over the years, the trophy has become one of the most popular and well-loved events in the ladies’ golfing calendar. It has given Carlyon Bay Ladies the chance to play at St Austell alongside St Austell Ladies, all for the same nominal entry fee (currently £3). Uniquely, no green fees have ever been applied – a tradition that has made this competition even more special.

The Three Sisters Trophy has always been more than just a competition. It has promoted friendship, camaraderie, and strong bonds between the two clubs, with many great friendships formed over the decades.

However, in recent years, attendance has steadily declined. We feel it is vital to raise awareness of this invaluable competition, especially among newer members, to ensure its legacy continues. This trophy has been played for over 35 years, and it would be a great loss if it were to fade away.

We are certain that the three sisters who created this tradition would be devastated to see it disappear. Let us honour their vision and commitment by keeping this event alive for future generations.
